Phones on a diet: Skinny cell phones

Nicole Lee Nicole Lee, Associate Editor June 25, 2009

Ever since the release of the Motorola Razr in late 2004, the trend of the superskinny phone has taken the country by storm. Fashionable, sexy, and easily portable, slim phones are still popular today. Many handsets have since superseded the Razr in the skinny phone department, however. For example, the Nokia 6500 Classic is one of the thinnest phones around at 0.37 inch, though it doesn't offer much in terms of features. The LG Glance, an entry-level camera phone for Verizon Wireless, is also quite thin at only 0.38 inch. For music phone fans, the Sony Ericsson W350a is only 0.4 inch. If you're into texting, the Pantech Slate claims to be the world's thinnest messaging phone at 0.39 inch thick, though the Samsung Magnet messaging phone comes close at 0.4 inch. But if you're really more of a smartphone person, the HTC Touch HD is one of a few slim Windows Mobile phones at only 0.4 inch thick.

The Bottom Line The Nokia 6500 Classic is a simple phone for making calls, and it adds a couple of extra features, to boot. And for an unlocked handset, it's quite affordable. The LG Glance is an affordable sleek and stylish entry-level camera phone for Verizon Wireless customers. The Sony Ericsson W350a isn't hopeless but it's not our choice for a Walkman phone. The Pantech Slate is a simple messaging phone with an attractive, yet functional, design. For AT&T customers looking for a basic messaging phone, the Samsung Magnet delivers with a slim QWERTY design and affordable price tag. The HTC Touch HD dazzles with its large, high-resolution touch screen, but the smartphone's feature set and performance is average at best. You can get much more for your money.
