Lighten your load: Featherweight cell phones

Kent German Kent German, Senior Editor August 22, 2007

As cell phones have become thinner, they've also become increasingly lighter. Not everyone loves this trend--some people like big and bulky handsets--but the trend toward petite portability is here to stay. Previously, the majority of wispy models lacked high-end features, such as Bluetooth, cameras, and so on--but that's beginning to change. Samsung has become particularly fond of thin models, but other manufacturers are making them as well. All of the models listed here are under 3 ounces. T-Mobile offers the Samsung SGH-T219, while the LG AX275 is an Alltel phone, and the Samsung SGH-X507, the Samsung SGH-A437, and the Pantech C150 are available with AT&T. Lastly is the Pantech C3b; at just 2.5 ounces, it's one of the smallest phones around.

The Bottom Line Though its red color is definitely eye-catching, the Samsung SGH-T219 doesn't impress. The LG AX275 doesn't offer fancy features, but it delivers on its basic calling promises. The Samsung SGH-X507 tries to be a good basic phone, but it can't quite pass the quality test. The Samsung SGH-A437 offers some decent features, but both its controls and its call quality are disappointing. The Pantech C150 is a solid basic camera phone with impressive call quality and an unbeatable price. The Pantech C3b is the world's smallest flip phone with Bluetooth.
