A rainbow of cells: Phones in multiple colors

Nicole Lee Nicole Lee, Associate Editor October 17, 2008

These days, cell phones are just as much fashion accessories as they are communication devices. It's not enough that the phones work; many people want a cell phone that will suit their personal style. Cell phone manufacturers understand this, and they sometimes release a cell phone model in multiple colors so you can pick a handset that matches your wardrobe. Of course there are many phones that come in multiple colors, so this is just a sampling.

Motorola has been famous for this in the past, with its multicolored Razr and Slvr models. The Motorola U9 is no exception, with pink, black, and purple colors. For those who want a simpler entry-level phone, the Sanyo Katana LX from Sprint comes in graphite, pink, and blue. One of our Editors' Choice award-winning phones, the Sony Ericsson W760a, comes in three eye-catching colors as well, such as the black, silver, and bright red models. For the smartphone enthusiast, few handsets come in more colors than the BlackBerrys and the Palm Centros. The RIM BlackBerry Pearl for instance, comes in black, white, red, blue, gold, plus silver. The Palm Centro is available in red, black, pink, white, and black.

The Bottom Line The Motorola U9 is a mostly reliable music phone with an eye-catching design. We had a few complaints, but it makes up for its deficiencies with good call quality. The Sanyo Katana LX is a decent entry-level camera phone for its price range. The Sony Ericsson W760i is the best Sony Ericsson Walkman phone we've seen, by far. It corrects one of Sony Ericsson's usual design pitfalls while offering a generous feature set and satisfying performance. We can suggest a few tweaks that should make it a winner. Though nothing revolutionary, the addition of multimedia features and the already solid e-mail capabilities make the RIM BlackBerry Pearl an attractive device for business users and consumers alike. The Palm Centro isn't the innovative product we were looking for from the company, but with its slimmer size, ease of use, and affordable price tag, the Centro is a good option for those looking for their first smartphone.
