The coolest MP3 cell phones

Though the Apple iPhone continues to get a lot of attention, it's far from being the first cell phone to have an MP3 player. Music handsets have come from every major manufacturer and they've landed at every U.S. carrier. They may not be compatible with iTunes, but they'll do a fine job of playing music. Here are our picks for the best music cell phones. The Samsung SGH-i450 is an unlocked GSM handset, so it will cost you more than few dollars without a service rebate. But even with the higher price it offers a decent player with good music quality. Also, we liked the nifty, ergonomic controls. The Nokia 5300 Xpress Music is available from T-Mobile or as an unlocked model. We love its design and its easy-to-use interface. Verizon Wireless has a thoroughly decent alternative with its LG Voyager VX10000. Not only does it have a good music player, but it also brings excellent performance and an array of features in an innovative design. Last on the list is Sprint's LG Muziq LX570. Its 3G support means you can download tracks over the air while dedicated music controls let you to access the player without opening the phone.

Review summary Despite some important missing features, a slow data network, and call quality that doesn't always deliver, the Apple iPhone sets a new benchmark for an integrated cell phone and MP3 player. It can't pass muster as a camera phone, but as a quality music handset the Samsung SGH-i450 more than holds its own. The Nokia 5300 is a well-designed, user-friendly music cell phone that offers an amazing range of features backed up by outstanding performance. Though we had some minor complaints here and there, the Voyager's sleek design, generous feature set and excellent performance make it the best LG messaging and multimedia phone by far. The LG Muziq is a well-rounded phone with a stylish look and a great feature set that takes full advantage of Sprint's broadband network.
