New Samsung cell phones

Kent German Kent German, Senior Editor April 14, 2009

Samsung is never one to rest on its laurels. While some manufacturers put out a mere trickle of new cell phones, Samsung always has a deluge of handsets. Trade shows are no exception, of course, and the company had a big presence at the CTIA show in Las Vegas where it introduced a handful of new handsets. One of these new devices, the Samsung Impression, impressed us (sorry) so much that we named it as our top phone of the show. Indeed, the messaging phone offers a brilliant display, an intuitive design, and a hefty load of multimedia features. After a thorough review, we ranked it as one of the best AT&T phones we've seen this year. Samsung also introduced the Samsung Propel Pro for AT&T. As Bonnie Cha found, it is a capable Windows Mobile device, but its bulky design makes it less appealing than AT&T's other messaging smartphones. The Samsung TwoStep for MetroPCS wasn't introduced at CTIA, but we just got the opportunity to check it out. Though its controls were a tad cramped and the call quality wasn't spectacular, it would make a great starter music phone. The Samsung SGH-T119 made its first appearance at CES 2009, too. It's a quality basic phone, but only for occasional use.

The Bottom Line The Samsung Impression isn't perfect, but it ranks high on our list as a messaging and multimedia phone. The Samsung Propel Pro is a capable Windows Mobile device, but its bulky design makes it less appealing than AT&T's other messaging smartphones. Even though its call quality could be improved, we'd still recommend the Samsung TwoStep as a good beginner music phone for U.S. Cellular. The Samsung SGH-T119 is a quality basic phone, provided you'll use it only occasionally.
