LG Chocolates: The phones that won't melt in your hand

The Chocolate was one of the first LG phones to leap headfirst into the sexy music phone category back in 2006. It set off a bunch of hype because of its slender slider design, its touch-sensitive keys, and, of course, its sweet chocolatey inspiration. Our European and Asian friends received the LG KG800, which is the GSM version of the device, while over here in the States, Verizon snagged exclusive rights to the CDMA model.
The two phones look quite a bit different; the first Verizon LG Chocolate had a unique touch-sensitive control wheel, while the GSM version (which is available unlocked as well) kept it simple with square navigation keys instead. Though the sex appeal of both phones is undeniable, in the end we just were not pleased with its touchy and hard-to-use controls.
Luckily, the second Chocolate to hit Verizon, the VX8550 Chocolate, sported a much improved design with a mechanical scroll wheel that's much easier to use. Still, it had those notorious touch-sensitive keys, but at least it had haptic feedback this time around. For 2008, LG went for a much wider appeal with the LG Chocolate 3 because of its brand-new flip-phone design. Even though we appreciate the feature upgrades (a 2.0-megapixel camera, 3.5-mm headset jack, built-in FM transmitter, etc.), the Chocolate 3's wide flip-phone design makes it look the least like its namesake.

| The Bottom Line |
Though the LG Chocolate is beautifully designed and offers a respectable mix of features and performance, it doesn't quite live up to the hype.
|
The LG KG800 Chocolate is indeed pretty, but its feature set and performance don't back up its trendy design.
|
The LG VX8550 Chocolate is definitely a big improvement over the original Chocolate, with a beautiful yet functional design plus a host of impressive features to boot.
|
The LG Chocolate 3's design doesn't quite match up to its predecessors, but upgraded features like a built-in FM transmitter makes it a worthy music phone purchase.
