Camera phones for the most basic of photo needs

Nicole Lee Nicole Lee, Associate Editor November 13, 2008

In a world where camera phones are now available in the 2- to 5-megapixel range, the humble VGA camera phone is left in the dust picking up the slack. However, there's still room for basic camera phones--if you want a phone primarily for making calls, you might still opt for a simple VGA camera to take snapshots. Maybe you want to take a picture of your parking spot so you remember where you parked, or you want to take a picture of something you saw in the store for later comparison--there are times when photo quality isn't as important as simply the capability to take a photo. Here are just a small sampling of VGA camera phones that have come our way recently.

The Bottom Line The LG VX5500 is a basic and affordable camera phone with decent performance. The Nokia 1680 is adequate for anyone with minimal cell phone needs, but even moderate users will find it disappointing. The Motorola VU204 is an easy-to-use cell phone with a simple design and good call quality. It offers a few extra features, as well. If it weren't for its plodding menu interface, the Nokia 2600 would be a simple and easy-to-use cell phone for communication.
