Best satellite radio receivers (XM/Sirius)

updated Jul 11

Are you sick of homogenized music, endless commercials, and spotty reception from your local Clear Channel outlet? Step into the 21st century with satellite radio. For a monthly subscription fee (about $13), both XM and Sirius offer dozens of commercial-free music stations, plus a variety of sports and uncensored talk and comedy channels as well. The two services have announced their intent to merge, but federal regulators have yet to sign off on the deal. In the meantime, you should choose the service that offers the exclusive programming you prefer (Howard Stern and the NFL on Sirius, Opie and Anthony and Major League Baseball on XM). Once you've settled on a provider, choose the hardware that best suits your needs: portable, home-based, or a plug-and-play transportable model that splits the difference. But these aren't your only options: remember that many car stereos are capable of receiving satellite broadcasts, and many home audio products (AV receivers, home theater systems, and even minisystems) are XM- or Sirius-ready--they just need an antenna accessory such as the XM Mini-Tuner or the Sirius Connect SC-H1 to receive the stations.
