February 23, 2005 | What computer would you start a 5-and-a-half-year-old on? Is it OK to start him this early? His kindergarten uses Apples starting next year. | Submitted by: Bruce,

You can find software geared toward children as young as 12 months and even more for 5-and-a-half-year-olds. Interestingly, the issues about choosing between Macs vs. Windows-based PCs are the same for kids as they are for adults: Macs are easier to use, but PCs have a wider selection of software and accessories. Your best bet is to choose the platform you're most comfortable with; that way you'll be best equipped to provide assistance.
