TV toss-up: LCD vs. plasma
March 31, 2005
Q
I read your Fully Equipped flat-panel-frenzy article and would like to know if you could provide any further information on LCD vs. plasma. One thing that has me concerned about plasma TVs is the "burn-in" issue that you wrote about. Have manufacturers made any progress resolving this problem?

Yes, Sandy, they have. Most plasmas now have screensavers and other anti-burn-in features that greatly reduce the risk, which really wasn't that high in the first place. Moreover, I'd say plasma is definitely the better deal right now, especially at 50 inches. Eventually, 42-inch LCDs may be the same price as their plasma counterparts, but for now, they cost significantly more. Just be aware that the next generation of plasmas is starting to come out. For example, Pioneer is turning over its line now. And make sure someone doesn't sell you last year's model if you're expecting a 2005 model.
