Q
I have a Windows XP PC with hundreds of files, especially Word documents. I plan to purchase an eMac. How can I transfer all my files to my new computer before getting rid of my old PC?

Depending on how many hundreds of files you have on your old PC and the sizes of those files, the easiest and quickest method may be to just burn a handful of CDs or, if your PC has a DVD burner, a DVD or two. Word files are typically pretty small, so you could fit hundreds onto a single CD-R disc. Just burn the files you want to take from your old PC onto a disc, then copy them over to your new eMac. A bonus: you'll then have an instant backup of all of your important files with the CDs you create.

If you have lots of larger files or your old PC doesn't have a CD burner, you can network your old PC and the eMac together with an application called Dave. Version 5.0.1 of the software works with Mac OS X and is free to try. (It costs $119 if you end up keeping your old PC and using both systems on the same network.)
