Why can't I run Windows XP SP2?

I run Windows XP and use Yahoo as my browser as provided by SBC's DSL. For security, I use the most recent version of ZoneAlarm Security Suite and Webroot SpySweeper. I installed SP2 about 18 months ago. It slowed the whole computer to a crawl. I uninstalled, and all worked just fine. Thinking they had improved both Yahoo and SP2, I recently installed SP2 again. But again the same problem. So after talking to Microsoft, Yahoo, and Gateway, I have uninstalled again. Question: Do I really need SP2? Have you heard of this problem involving SP2?

I have heard a few complaints about machines that are unable to run XP SP2. If Microsoft and Gateway recommend that you turn SP2 off, I would hazard a guess that your machine doesn't have the power to run XP SP2. And do you really need SP2? That's debatable. You have a firewall and antispyware--both of which come with SP2--but you'll miss out on future releases of Internet Explorer. For IE 7, now in beta, you'll need SP2.
