Which camera's best for both close-ups and telephoto shots?
December 20, 2006
Q
I am a biologist and going to spend four months working in Africa. I would like to get a digital camera that has good capabilities for taking both close-up (flowers) and telephoto (lions) shots. It looks to me like the Canon PowerShot S3 might be the way to go. Would you agree, or what else would you recommend?

I think that's a great choice. The only thing you might want to consider is that the S3 IS--and all its megazoom brethren--don't offer a really wide angle of view. You might want to ask for some accessories, such as the WC-DC58 0.8X conversion lens, plus the Lens Adapter/Hood set, as part of your bon-voyage gifts.
