"Altogether, we have three Sony PCs. This notebook downstairs, my wife primarily uses for work. Upstairs, I have a desktop with two LCDs, including a 32-inch model. Once you buy one Sony product, you tend to just keep buying 'em--it makes life easier."

Robert, your desk-mounted home theater gets some points for creativity, but there are a few details we'd do differently. The plasma is mounted too high on the wall, and the bricks reflect sound, so something to dampen it would significantly improve the sound quality. Also, if you placed the satellite speakers on the wall a little farther apart, you'd get better surround-sound separation.

Television
Daewoo DP-42SM 42-inch plasma EDTV monitor Daewoo DP-42SM 42-inch plasma EDTV monitor
Robert is hardly the only one who thinks most TVs are all alike under the hood, but the truth is there can be big differences. We haven't reviewed this Daewoo model, but based on our experience, a no-frills model such as the Panasonic TH-42PWD6UY--also a 42-inch plasma EDV monitor--would likely deliver much better video quality for around the same price.

HTIB (Home theater in a box)
Sony DAV-FC8 DVD Dream System Sony DAV-FC8 DVD Dream System
There's no denying that they look great, but we're not big fans of the sound quality of Sony's DVD Dream HTIBs, which range in price from $500 to $1,000 (the closest model to Robert's is the FC9). Instead, our top pick in this category of pricey HTIBs is the Onkyo LS-V955.

Notebook
Sony VAIO PCG-R505 SuperSlim Pro Sony VAIO PCG-R505 SuperSlim Pro
Though the PCG-R505 has been discontinued, you can still find some configurations of this midrange consumer notebook. Newer models such as the V505 are smaller and lighter, and they have features such as integrated wireless and DVD burners.

Cordless phone
VTech VT5831 VTech VT5831
The first 5.8GHz cordless phone, the VT5831 is still a solid choice. Though performance is only average, it is expandable to six headsets, has a great design, and comes with loads of features, including a separate dial pad and speakerphone in the main base unit (not shown).
