Carriers and unlocked cell phones

I was reading your Quick Take of the Motorola V635 and noticed it has yet to be picked up by a major carrier. What exactly does that mean? If I want the phone, what do I need to do to make it compatible with my carrier's network?

At present, the Motorola V635 is not sold by a U.S. carrier.
That means you can buy the phone, but you'll
most likely pay full price, as you won't be entitled to any
rebates or discounts that come with signing up for a carrier's
service. This scenario is unique to GSM phones such as the V635,
and since the mobiles are sold unlocked, they're not tied to one particular carrier.
If you want to buy this phone, there are a couple of things
you'll need to keep in mind. You'll be able to use it with only a
GSM carrier, so you're limited to T-Mobile and Cingular.
Fortunately, it is quad-band (GSM 850/1900/1800/1900), so you can go with either provider; Cingular takes the 850
band, while T-Mobile employs 1900. Once you pop in your SIM
card, you can make calls. For data, however,
you'll need the necessary settings from your carrier.
