Viewing screens in direct sunlight
August 14, 2007
Q
Hello, I recently purchased a Zen Sleek Photo, and I noticed that you can't see the screen in the sun. I'm now interested in buying a Zen Vision:M, so I was wondering if the screen is harder to see in the sun just like the Sleek's? Or can you see the screen, no matter what color I purchase?

The Zen Sleek Photo uses an OLED screen, which we're beginning to see more and more frequently on MP3 players due to the following benefits: lower power consumption, better viewing angles, and the ability to show a greater range of colors. However, since OLED screens also don't use a backlight (hence the longer battery life they allow), they're nearly impossible to see in direct sunlight. Since the Zen Vision:M uses a TFT LCD--and a backlight--the screen will be easier to see outdoors in the sun.

I hope this helps to clear things up!
