The 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge
Slide 1 of 15

For the second year in a row, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) sponsored a race for autonomous vehicles. With a $2 million prize, many teams took up the challenge. The vehicles had to drive themselves over a tough, 132-mile desert course full of obstacles such as GPS-blocking tunnels and switchbacks. Last year, no vehicle could run the full course. This year, 5 of the 20 competitors found their way to the end.
