The Grand Challenge winner, Stanford's Stanley, is based on a Volkswagen Touareg. The Stanford team used the diesel version of the Touareg, which is powered by a 10-cylinder TDI engine. Volkswagen built the drive-by-wire components that allow computer control of the car. Beyond added skid plates, Stanley relies on the Touareg's solid off-road capability to negotiate the desert terrain.
