2008 Lexus LS600h L
Sleek, luxurious, and loaded with so many tech features that a geek can only giggle with delight? Check. Safe and socially responsible? Check and mate, as far as we're concerned. Lexus's LS600h L is a posher, hybrid version of the
LS 460, powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 that can summon 430 horsepower with a boost from the three high-powered electric motors. And those guts come with glory: this is an
SULEV (super-ultra-low-emissions vehicle) that should produce only about 20 percent of the typical V-8's emissions. Moreover, the Lexus helps you drive it: tech features include a touch-screen navigation system with real-time traffic info, the
Advanced Parking Guidance System (you brake, but the car parallel-parks itself via sonar), a radar to detect obstacles, driver-side cameras that assess whether you see those objects ahead, and alerts and evasive techniques if you don't. If those gadgets don't alleviate the stress of driving, recline in the rear, ottoman-style seat with built-in massage, watch a DVD on the wide-screen LCD, and enjoy the 450-watt, 19-speaker surround sound. We haven't heard a firm release date or price yet, but we expect it will be available in the spring of 2007 in the $80,000 to $100,000 range.
