Top five tech cars of 2007

Today's cars offer a lot more tech than seat warmers and cassette decks. If you're looking for a new ride that's loaded with the latest nav devices, audio tech, hands-free phone support, and even live traffic info, there's something on this list for you.

The 2008 BMW 535i is a really exceptional car, offering a great driving experience and an impressive array of electronics in the cabin. The integration of live traffic with the car's navigation system is the finest we've seen; its hands-free cell phone system is top notch; and the audio quality from its premium sound system is excellent. From its shifter to its live traffic system, the BMW 535i's innovative features should make any techie drool.

The 2008 Lexus LS 600h is a classy car with all the tech you could ask for, both under the hood and in the cabin. The stereo system sounds fantastic and comes with a hard-drive music server. Live traffic reporting is integrated with the navigation system for smart destination routing. Its hybrid system gives it a better environmental pedigree than its luxury class competitors, and its driving performance is very good.

The 2007 Mercedes-Benz CL550 represents the best that the German automaker has to offer. With a premium version of the COMAND system, adaptive cruise control, Night View assist, wonderfully programmable seats, and an arsenal of other performance and safety technologies, it very nearly justifies its six-figure price tag.

While the new Lancer GTS boasts amenities not seen on other cars in its class, a powerful engine isn't one of them. But if rally car looks, nice tech options, and a booming stereo are more your speed, this Mitsubishi is an excellent choice. It offers touch-screen navigation, Bluetooth, and a 650-watt audio system with a 30GB hard drive.

Cadillac's efforts to reposition its brand extend to the cabin electronics in the update to the Cadillac CTS, with a new infotainment system that outstrips the competition. We've seen live traffic integration and a music server on the Lexus LS 460, but Cadillac introduces both features on its lowest-end model, the 2008 Cadillac CTS. The car comes with an 8-speaker Bose system, including centerfill and a subwoofer. Or you can upgrade to a 10-speaker Bose system with 5.1 surround sound.
