Docking stations
Updated December 14, 2005

If you intend to use one of the tiniest ultraportables as your primary computer, a complementary dock or port replicator will go a long way toward simplifying your life. Rather than plugging in all of your connections one by one--DSL, mouse, keyboard, external monitor, and so on--you can leave them plugged in to the dock, then drop in your laptop when you're working at home. In addition to consolidating plugs into one connection, the best docks provide extra ports, including DVI for connecting to an LCD or a plasma screen, along with quality speakers and adjustability options for tilting the keyboard and raising the notebook's display to eye level.

Review summary The Fujitsu Port Replicator offers a decent array of ports, but not much more. With a decent variety of ports, a pair of speakers, and a modular bay, the IBM X4 UltraBase will give your ThinkPad X40 a multimedia boost. If you're looking for an attractive notebook riser and a few extra USB ports--and nothing more--the Kensington Laptop Desktop USB 2.0 will do the trick. The simple Sony VAIO Port Replicator does the little things well but doesn't do enough for the money. Simple and portable, the Targus Mobile Docking Station with Ethernet offers a very modest assortment of basic ports, which most notebooks will already have.
