Budget desktop PCs
Updated December 14, 2005

When shopping for a desktop for your home office, it's important to find the best long-term investment while staying within your budget. You don't want to overspend now for the latest machine when, for example, you need only to run Excel while sending e-mail. Nor should you buy an ultra-low-end, outdated configuration that you'll be itching to replace within the next year or two. In addition, a business system should feature a well-designed case, making upgrades or repairs as painless as possible, especially if you act as your own IT staff. And should you run into a problem that requires professional help, the PC should come with a warranty that provides round-the-clock phone and online support, as well as quick turnaround time for any necessary repairs or replacements.

Unless you're running a design shop or are otherwise using intensive graphics apps day to day, you can pass on expensive parts, such as the fastest processor, gobs of memory, and cutting-edge graphics cards. All of the systems here eschew flashy case lights and gimmicks for basic but reliable components and good bang for your buck.

Review summary HP's first small-form-factor PC, the Pavilion s7220n Slimline, is a stylish and able budget performer, but its lack of expandability makes it better suited for use as a second PC. Dell's mainstream Dimension E510 looks good from the outside, but surprisingly limited configuration options dampen our enthusiasm. The E-4500D is the midrange model in Gateway's E-series line of corporate desktops, offering straight-ahead business computing with no surprises for volume buyers who expect easy deployment and a long life cycle. The versatile, expandable, reasonably powerful eMachines T6524 is a solid family computer and a perfect dorm-room companion that gets mainstream jobs done with aplomb.
