The Palm family album

Palm is celebrating its 10th birthday this year (on March 27, to be exact), so we thought it'd be nice to get the gang together for a family portrait. After all, the company has come a long way since it first launched the original PalmPilot 1000, which debuted with 128K of memory and a 16MHz Samsung processor. Since then, we've seen Palm evolve its product line, ranging from the Palm IIIc to the Palm m105 and the Palm Treo 270, for example; go through several name changes; and even make friends with the enemy. All in all, it's been an action-packed decade. Unfortunately, due to limited space, we couldn't track the entire Palm genealogy, but we have the latest group of PDAs and smart phones from the company. From the granddaddy of them all, the Palm Treo 650/700w, to the cute baby of the group, the Palm Z22, Palm has a long tradition of producing some fine PDAs. Get to know the family.

Review summary The Palm Z22 provides an affordable, very basic, and easy-to-use PDA suitable for first-time buyers and technophobes. The Palm TX offers a winning package of wireless connectivity, productivity tools, and fun for users of all kinds. There isn't too much the PalmOne LifeDrive can't do with its integrated hard drive, its wireless connectivity, and its multimedia capabilities, but it's way too expensive. The Palm Tungsten E2 delivers the sleek and affordable combination of productivity and entertainment in a package that should satisfy mobile professionals and consumers alike. Though it has its shortcomings, the Palm Treo 650 offers solid performance and adds some key features to maintain its reign as smart-phone leader. The Palm Treo 700w brings Windows Mobile and a number of useful features, such as push e-mail and photo speed dial, to the much-beloved smart phone, but its heft and its washed-out screen has us giving the edge to the Treo 650.
