Looking at the NetGear MR314 cable/DSL wireless router and the SMC Barricade wireless broadband router on a store shelf, you'd have a hard time telling them apart. Both offer a multiport switch, an 802.11b access point, Web-based management, and excellent performance for less than $250.
However, upon closer inspection, you'll notice they each have several distinct features. The MR314 offers Web-content filtering and instant e-mail alerts to help protect your family from unsavory Internet material. The SMC, on the other hand, offers home and small-office users above-average security, a serial port for a backup modem, and a parallel port to attach a printer. While both routers are capable and easy to use, details such as these could single out the one that better fits your network.
