Share the wealth: networked hard drives
Felisa Yang

As the per-megabyte cost of storage drops, hard drive makers have had to distinguish themselves in other ways. A logical move has been to add network capabilities to their drives, a move that's in line with the general proliferation of home and small-office networks. Multiple users can share data, music, and video files.

Keep in mind that there are variations among networked hard drives. Some incorporate print servers or FTP servers, while others include USB hubs that allow you to make a daisy chain of several drives for increased capacity.

Review summary Buffalo's LinkStation is the best low-cost solution for adding storage and a print server to a home or small-business network. If your computer's hard drive is choking on all that the Internet has to offer, Ximeta's NetDisk can be a place to stash it all quickly and easily. The EFG120 offers the perfect feature set for some small businesses, but everyone else should turn to better-equipped competition.
