Bargain routers for basic users

If you live in a small, single-story house or apartment or just need the most basic network for occasional Web surfing or e-mail, the range and throughput benefits of a high-end router are probably irrelevant to you. Why pay for something you won't use? Happily, you can still find no-frills routers at bargain-basement prices. You'll get a working network and still have enough money left over for something you do want to splurge on.

Review summary Though it's not the best long-range performer, the U.S. Robotics Wireless MaxG router is one of the cheapest ways to achieve decent wireless throughput over long distances. Time and money are required to properly install the WGU624, but tech buffs will find both well spent. With a little hunting for a good deal, you can get the faster version of this router, the DI-624, for the same price or less. The Linksys WRT54GS is especially well suited for networks with both 802.11g and 802.11b connections. The Zyxel Prestige 334W offers a nice array of security features, but its configuration is too complex for those new to networking.
