GPS for road and trail |

Car GPS navigation units work better than maps for finding your way through unfamiliar streets, but if your route also involves getting out of the car, you may still get lost. A good handheld GPS device can offer the same features, including turn-by-turn directions, as a car-mounted unit, with the advantage that you can carry it with you out of the vehicle. If you hike or do other outdoor activities, a handheld GPS is almost essential since you'll probably be driving to a trailhead or other embarkation point. The devices below represent a few options for handheld navigation. Some are completely self-contained, while others work with your existing handheld. If you're going to use a GPS handheld in your car, you'll also want to consider a mounting kit, such as the Arkon powered PDA mount.

| Review summary | Magellan's SporTrak Color is a powerful handheld GPS device with a bright color display and a wealth of features for the outdoor enthusiast. | Thanks to excellent navigation software, the iQue M5 ranks among the best GPS/PDA combos we've seen--but it's too expensive. | Though still a practical PDA/GPS combo, the Mio 168RS offers few compelling improvements over its predecessor. | TeleType's GPS Bluetooth Receiver has everything you'll need for wireless navigation on your PDA, but the mapping software could be more user-friendly. | The versatile Earthmate connects wirelessly to your PDA or laptop via a USB cable, but it misses the mark in the coolness category. |
