It seems to be a normal day. You arrive at your desk and press the button that powers up your computer, just as you have a thousand times before.

But as you go about your daily computing rounds, something subtly and disturbingly wrong--something you can't quite put your finger on. Suddenly, a suited figure appears out of nowhere, smoking a cigarette. He takes a drag and informs you that you have just entered another dimension--a world of darkness and mystery. Welcome to Windows 98.

OK, we've never seen Rod Serling deliver a monologue about Windows 98 (and probably never will unless Microsoft's Office Assistants get a serious overhaul). But we have experienced the eerie and nightmarish side of this OS. CD-ROM drives that were there a scant hour ago no longer register. A routine upgrade trashes all the settings you so meticulously put into place. You try to remove a recalcitrant program, and it won't budge. And, when you dial Microsoft's technical support--cue the creepy music--you find yourself on what seems to be perpetual hold.

Windows 98 really can be a nightmare, and we've got five horror stories to prove it. As we work our way through each disturbing episode, you may feel as though you're reliving a half-remembered nightmare. But don't panic. Just as most Twilight Zone episodes wrapped up tidily in half an hour, you can extricate yourself from Windows 98 nightmares, too. We'll show you how.
