Plug the holes in the Millennium OS

Where do you want to go today? Windows Me or Windows XP?

Microsoft expects Windows XP to be a big improvement over the Windows 95/98/Me crowd. Thanks to its enterprise-strength, Windows NT-based kernel, XP should crash less often and offer better security.

That's all well and good, but what if you're just not ready for the upgrade or don't want to spend the cash? (After all, XP requires a faster processor and more memory than its predecessors.) Besides, XP is at least a few months off. For many of you with older (and slower) PCs, Windows Me is the OS of choice for now. No, Millennium isn't perfect (and readers have told us so in abundance), but the good news is that it's open to improvement, thanks to a boatload of patches, fixes, and third-party utilities.

We've assembled a collection of the best Windows Me boosters we could find; most of them are available at our own Download.com. Read on to get the most out of your current OS.
