How we calculate the Buzz

July 14, 2004
Apparently, it's the time of year to buy a new cell phone; current and future models dominated our search logs this week. After that, though, you wanted new browsers, new file-sharing apps, and, um, poker technology. You hipsters, you.

1 Cell phones
It must be shopping season for cell phones. For some reason, this week you were searching for cell phones--and almost nothing else. Tops among the phones you wanted to read about: the LG VX7000, sequel to the extremely popular VX6000 and Verizon's next in a small lineup of camera phones (look for our First Take within a week). Next up, it looks like you heard about the FCC posting pictures and specs on the upcoming Sidekick II from Danger (successor to the popular Sidekick). We'd like to get a look at it, too. The Motorola A630 and the Sony Ericsson P800 rounded out our list of top search terms, proving that you're interested in at least a few phones you can actually buy.

1 Maxthon
You continued last week's searches for browser alternatives, and this week, you introduced us to an all-new browser called Maxthon. Us: "Huh. Who knew?" It turns out that Maxthon is the new name for a browser called MyIE2, which is a skinnable browser that lets you open multiple pages in one window, à la Opera. That's the good news. But to answer your question, Maxthon is also based on the Internet Explorer core (it requires that you have IE 5.x or 6 in order to install), meaning, we think, that it'd still have all the same security problems IE has.

4 Oceanic
Or did you mean Oceanic? Or maybe just Oceanic? Searches for the fairly vague Oceanic popped up all over the place last week, leading us to wonder whether you were interested in the underwater housing for MP3 players or what appears to be Hawaii's Time Warner cable branch. Yeah, on second thought, you must mean the underwater housing for MP3 players, which works with the iRiver 300-series player (in its DV-X configuration) and many other players in its many other configurations. OK, now we get why the search term was so broad, too. You guys are on it.

3 WinMX
Oh, the allure of the old something-for-nothing. Many of you appeared to be shopping for a new file-sharing app this week, and the recently updated WinMX caught your fancy. We last looked at it quite a while ago, and most folks thought it was dead when no update appeared for about two years. Finally, though, a new version has emerged, and from the looks of things, it's already top of the pops on Download.com. That's cool, because we've heard that Kazaa is totally over.

5 Poker
Looks like you're the type of readers we'd probably want to hang out with. One of our biggest search terms last week was, well, poker. We know the game is all the rage lately, what with the World Series of Poker, the World Poker Tour, Celebrity Poker Showdown, and uh, Ben Affleck. Granted, CNET's collection of poker information is, as you can see, somewhat limited. We'd never leave you high and dry, though--at least, not if you own a gaming console. In the meantime, we'll add poker-related technology to our list of things to watch. (Here's Texas Hold 'Em for Pocket PC, to whet your appetite.)
