Once again, CNET readers surprise us with their varied interests and amusing lack of understanding about our technology-specific mission. This week, Doom 3 shows surprising staying power, while the iPod suffers a shocking slide to result number 5!

Doom 3
Granted, you were probably looking for the review, which GameSpot has kindly provided. (The nutshell version: It gets a "great," although in terms of gameplay, it's quite similar to the original Doom--maybe not such a bad thing, though, since Doom, like, uh, changed the world and junk.) Nevertheless, it was a pleasant surprise to see so many of you looking for dish on this news-making game release, especially after last week's polling told us that a slim majority of you "couldn't care less" about Doom 3. Apparently, the searchers and the voters are two different audiences.

Rio Carbon
See, you probably don't remember this, but last week we said that although the white iPod pretty much owns the MP3 player joint, the iPod Mini had just enough weaknesses to make it ripe for takeover. It's exhausting to be right all the time, but someone has to do this job. For the first time recently, searches for iPod fell off slightly, and searches for the Rio Carbon, a pretty hot-looking new iPod Mini competitor, took slot number 2, just before michelle vieth video. (Why are you looking for that here?)

Quicken 2005
Maybe it's all the news about the Fed raising interest rates, general economic concerns, or heck, the impending election ("it's the economy, stupid"), but interest in the just-announced Quicken 2005 was unusually strong over the past week. No, seriously. Right after that nice Michelle Vieth person (you guys know we just cover computer stuff, right?) comes Quicken 2005, top of the search pops. Luckily for you, I've got it on good authority that our full review is coming down the pipe today.

LG L1150
OK, this one was a real detective hunt. Why on earth would a low-priced, basic flip phone with only the most rudimentary of features (and hardly any interest in normal days) be topping our search results for almost a solid week? After all, it's cheap at $49.99, but it's not that cheap. Or is it? Yes, yes, of course it is. Now known as the "1-cent phone," the LG L1150 is currently on sale from Yahoo Shopping for just one mostly copper penny, with new service activation from AT&T. Got to hand it to you folks: You know how to find a deal. (Along the same lines is the Samsung d415, which is actually a very cool GSM phone with a sliding number pad, selling at Amazon for $99.99 after rebates.)
