Usenet 
A worldwide network of thousands of Unix systems with a decentralized administration. Usenet systems transmit postings (messages) to special-interest newsgroups, or discussion groups. Before the advent of the Web, you needed a newsreader program to participate in Usenet; now there are Web-based interfaces, such as those offered by Google and Yahoo.
