CNET GLOSSARY: Terms for the techie
Web server
A computer that hosts and delivers Web pages. The term is often used to refer to both the Web server software and the computer than runs it. But strictly speaking, it's the software. A computer could be running server software but also performing regular computing tasks; a computer set up solely as a Web server is called a dedicated Web server. A Web server has an IP address and uses the HTTP and TCP/IP protocols to deliver Web pages to client computers.
