byte
A unit of measure that usually describes a single character, such as a letter or a number. One byte, abbreviated as B, is typically made up of 8 bits, although longer sequences such as 16, 32, and 64 bits are also possible. Data storage is measured in bytes: a kilobyte is roughly a thousand bytes (technically, 1,024); a megabyte is a million bytes (1,048,576); and a gigabyte is about a billion bytes (1,073,741,824).
