ROM
read-only memory
An integrated memory chip that typically contains hardwired instructions for use when a computer boots up. The instructions, contained in a small program called the BIOS, load from ROM and start up the hard disk so that the operating system can be loaded. Some ROM chips (such as EEPROMs or flash BIOSs) can be updated with new instructions.
