server
A computer on a network that controls the resources of that network. There are different kinds of servers: print servers control access to the printers on a network; application servers provide network users with access to software applications; proxy servers act as intermediaries between a user and a server the user is trying to access, to speed performance and enhance security; and Web servers host Web sites. In a client/server network, the server responds to requests from the client computer for information and resources. The word server describes both the physical computer and the server software that runs on it. A server can be a dedicated machine, meaning its sole purpose is to be a server; or it can also process other tasks even whle acting as a server.
