CNET GLOSSARY: Terms for the techie
telephony
The technology that makes it possible to transmit sound between two distant points. Traditionally, that meant the conventional telephone system, but as telephony has become entwined with computing and the Internet (blurring the distinction between telephony and telecommunications), telephony tends to refer to technologies that involve modems, sound cards, speakerphones, voicemail systems, and the like. Telephony add-in boards combine these functions.
