TWAIN
An industry standard software protocol and applications programming interface that allows images to be transferred directly from a scanner or a digital camera into any image-editing program. The word TWAIN was taken from Rudyard Kipling's "The Ballad of East and West": "and never the twain shall meet"; it is not an acronym.
