CNET GLOSSARY: Terms for the techie
Post Office Protocol 3
A common standard for accessing e-mail on the Internet. With POP3, you connect to a server and download all of your messages, which are then deleted from the server. A problem with this method is that you must download messages to read them; this can be inconvenient if some of the messages contain graphics or video and are therefore very large. The newer IMAP standard lets you view messages on the server.
