protocol
The rules that govern how computers send data to one another. Because so many different types of computers and operating systems communicate via modems or other means, they have to follow communications standards. For example, the Internet is a heterogeneous collection of networked computers that use the PPP, TCP/IP, SLIP, and FTP protocols, among others.
