command-line interface 
Before graphical interfaces such as Windows and the Mac operating system emerged, users interacted with their PCs by typing text commands. While the drag-and-drop simplicity of a graphical user interface (GUI) is attractive to many users, some power users (and many Unix users) prefer command-line interfaces because they allow greater flexibility and control.
