LZW compression 
Lempel-Ziv-Welch compression 
A lossless compression technique used in the GIF format. It can also be used in TIFF, PDF, and PostScript Level 2 files. This technique was initially developed in 1977 and 1978 by Abraham Lempel and Jacob Ziv, then further refined in 1983 by Terry Welch.
