CNET GLOSSARY: Terms for the techie
memory
Often used as a synonym for random access memory (RAM), which consists of microchips located on the computer's motherboard that hold programs and data for quick access by a computer's CPU. All data processing takes place in memory, so the amount a computer has determines the number and size of programs it can run concurrently. RAM chip size is measured in megabytes. Other types of memory include ROM, programmable ROM (PROM), EPROM, and EEPROM.
