CNET GLOSSARY: Terms for the techie
Short for monophonic. Single-channel sound with no left/right differentiation; in other words, the sound is exactly the same in both right and left speakers. Mono is not as pleasant or natural-sounding as stereo, but because mono files require only half the information that a stereo file requires, they are more efficient.
