CNET GLOSSARY: Terms for the techie
Mount Rainier
The famous volcano overshadowing Seattle, Washington, has lent its name to a packet-writing standard for CD and DVD drives that's designed to make saving files to disc a lot easier. Among other features, Mount Rainier allows automatic disc formatting and drag-and-drop file transfer, instead of the more complicated formatting and writing schemes optical drives currently require. The standard is jointly developed by industry heavyweights including Microsoft, Philips, Sony, and HP/Compaq.
