hack 
The word hack is not as closely related to hacker as you might think. Both terms have to do with programming, but while the latter has subversive or criminal connotations, the former generally does not.

(1) An unofficial modification or extension to a software program, especially for the Palm OS.

(2) A quick fix to a program. If it's an inelegant fix, then it's also known as a kludge.

(3) The act of creating a hack.
