CNET GLOSSARY: Terms for the techie
helper applications
The only type of media a Web browser absolutely has to handle is hypertext. Graphics, sounds, and multimedia are luxuries that many browsers shuck off to helper applications, separate programs that launch when needed to handle a particular kind of data. Helper apps include RealPlayer and Adobe Acrobat Reader. A helper app is sometimes called a viewer, but it should not be confused with a plug-in, which integrates itself into the browser.
