graphics accelerator 
A circuit board (or card) that enables a computer to display graphics on a monitor. Most computers have a graphics accelerator that contains its own processor, in order to speed up the processing of displaying the complex 2D and 3D graphics tasks required by many gaming and graphics programs. A graphics accelerator is the same thing as a video adapter.
