CNET GLOSSARY: Terms for the techie
digital subscriber line
Digital subscriber lines carry data at high speeds over standard telephone wires. DSL supports download speeds from 384Kbps to 1.5Mbps (the near-unattainable maximum is 8Mbps), depending on the quality of the lines and the distance your particular connection stretches from the telco switching station. The term xDSL is used to describe the many variations of DSL, such as ADSL and HDSL.
