DVD-A
DVD-audio
The DVD standard for audio, allowing up to 192KHz, 24-bit PCM sampling; Dolby Digital, DTS, or MPEG audio compression; 5.1 multichannel sound; and additional video and photographic content a la mixed-mode CDs. Standalone DVD audio players are available to play the limited but expanding library of DVD audio discs, and some late-model DVD movie players can also play them. Sony's SACD competes with DVD-A competitor as the high-end audiophile standard, but regular 44.1KHz/16-bit CD audio should continue to be the mainstream standard for the foreseeable future.
